What foreign attorneys should know
- Law: Andean Community Decision 486, administered by the SIC. First-to-file.
- Madrid Protocol: member since 2012; designations are renewed at WIPO, national registrations at the SIC.
- Registration: about 6–8 months without opposition; opposition period 30 working days from publication.
- Term and renewal: 10 years; renewal window 6 months before expiry, 6-month grace period with surcharge, no proof of use.
- Non-use: cancellation possible after 3 consecutive years without use in an Andean country.
- Formalities: simple power of attorney; no notarisation, apostille or legalisation.

Before you instruct
Do you accept instructions from foreign IP firms and agents?
Yes. Most of our work comes from law firms and IP agents abroad who need a Colombian associate. We report in English, quote fixed fees in US dollars and work from written instructions by email.
What power of attorney is needed to act in Colombia?
A simple power of attorney signed by the applicant or owner. No notarisation, apostille or consular legalisation is required, and a scanned copy is accepted for filing.
How long does a trademark application take in Colombia?
Around 6 to 8 months from filing to registration when there is no opposition or office action. The opposition period is 30 working days from publication in the Industrial Property Gazette.
What do trademark renewals cost in Colombia?
Our professional fee is USD 150 per registration for the first class and USD 75 for each additional class. The official SIC fee for 2026 is COP 734,000 for the first class and COP 360,500 per additional class, passed through at the exchange rate of the day.
